Zella Day

Compass

Zella Day is back with another skyscraping single from her forthcoming, self-titled debut EP, but really, it seems she hadn't left our mind since we last heard her on "East of Eden" two months ago. The track really solidified our interest in the southwestern songstress, and, according to the stats it accrued, really rolled out quite a base of fans for the rising artist. It's entirely understandable why, too, when one listens to the pretty, pop-infused sound she casts, and though she's departed from that for her new track here, she's displayed a sense of sonic diversity that's going to simultaneously please fans, and assist in the progression of her own artistic development, too. As we mentioned above, "Compass" portrays a more personal sound of Zella's, and while we knew it was a kind always kept close within her, it wasn't until we walked through her latest effort here that we experienced it in its fresh and full-blown intimacy. As an ode to her Arizonan roots, it's not difficult to see why or how her cherished geographic and cultural sentiments pour out on the track, and we really love how vividly she's managed to articulate and exalt the so-integral place in her life. Necessarily, "Compass" has an organic sound oozing from it, and we think that that'll have it vaulting into the hearts and minds of those longing for something fresh, effortlessly inspiring, and absolutely fruitful for the ears.
