We Were Evergreen

Be Like You (The Jungle Book Cover)

If you grew up in the 1990s, there's no question that Disney's The Jungle Book was an essential part of your upbringing, and with that being the case, you should remember this song and scene from it. Now, keep that close in the back of your mind, and take a listen to what indie-pop act We Were Evergreen has done with their brand-new cover of it. Production-wise, Evergreen's version of the track is completely different (it's electronic-oriented), but the lyrics remain, and even through it sounds nothing like the original, it's something that's worthy of standing on its own and not just piggybacking off the nostalgia of the movie clip. Here's what the band itself had to say about the cover: "We wanted to revisit a classic tune from everyone's childhood: the original song not only has a great melody, but the lyrics themselves have a much deeper meaning than what the Disney film shows. By keeping the melodic base but making the arrangements darker, we wanted to bring out the idea lurking behind the song: that universal feeling of envy, the need to fit in - a theme that we already developed in our first album... this track is more sombre, with a slower groove - it follows the direction set off by some of the more personal songs from our debut album Towards, and features more alternation between male and female vocals. It might be an indication of what's to come..." [via The Line of Best Fit]
