Waylayers make their living by modernizing throwback-pop, and their latest '80s-inspired single is a gem in line with that sound. The UK-based trio has a couple of singles floating around on the internet, but it looks as if they're ramping up for some sort of full-length release, because not only are the songs getting stronger, but their sound is starting to become more defined as well. "Pharaoh" kicks off with a very minimal string of echo-y synth notes, but it quickly matures into something much more intricate, and by the time the track hits its stride, you're left with no doubt that this is not only one of their strongest offerings to date, but also one of their most innovative yet. It's certainly a bit darker than their other stuff, but the added gravity was the perfect way to make their sound more competitive, we think, and we're surely excited to see what they manage to do next.
