Waitress — Young In Mind

Young In Mind

This track by the Copenhagen alt-pop trio, Waitress, has got a little bit of everything. Although it does have a bit of that classic Scandinavian synth-pop sound which we've come to expect from bands that from the particular neck of the woods, Waitress hasn't committed itself to that production style, entirely. Instead, they've mixed and matched a handful of different sounds from an even bigger handful of genres. The intro to "Young In Mind" features a series of guitar chords that would normally be supplemented with a couple more layers of sound texture, but in this case, it's just a chopped-up beat and some no-nonsense vocals. It's a cool sound, and it keeps the track from feeling too overwrought or unnecessarily polished. As the track progresses, more elements do eventually come into play, but the band never loses sight of the emotions they captured with the first couple of notes. While so many of their contemporaries have mastered the art of production perfection, these guys are letting things hang just a bit looser, and the result, "Young In Mind", is a single that is much more than the sum of its parts. Waitress put in the legwork where it counted, but avoided buffing everything out to a mirror finish, and we're happy that was the case.
