"Við Vökum" is the latest offering from hyper-talented Icelandic trio Vök, and it's a stunner. Right from the start on the track, we're met with singular, high-quality production—but don't think for a second that that means another ho-hum breezy electronic number. Outlandish and dark, "Við Vökum" aims to haunt its listener, and it definitely succeeds in this respect. Vocalist Margret Ran Magnusdóttir's desolate vocals and a chilling tenor sax line sigh and float over stark drums and stuttering synths, and together they deliver an effect that is as unsettling as it is appealing. As the effort clearly demonstrates, Vök is more then just another duo with serious production chops. Rather, they're first-rate musicians with a distinct musical sensibility, and "Við Vökum" goes to show that they've got serious potential. "Við Vökum" follows the previously released "Tension" and "Before", and all three singles will be featured on Vök's forthcoming, five-track debut EP, Tension, that's due out in October via The MuseBox Records.
