Vince Staples is back again with Prima Donna, his’ first project following the release of his wildly successful 20-track LP, Summertime ’06, that helped him solidify his place in the hip-hop world. Although it's been a little over a year since his last major release, Vince has been able to keep fans happy with collaborations with other artists, but we are very happy to see him return in project-form here. The EP kicks off with a brief, raspy rendition of "This Little Light of Mine", and then it's full speed ahead into the wild world of Vince. This is a world filled with vivid experiences told over coarse instrumentation and unconventional production, and this combination is seen on slick highlight track "War Ready". Produced by James Blake and featuring a fragment of an old André 3000 verse, "War Ready" helps to properly set the tone of the whole EP. Another notable piece is the A$AP Rocky-assisted track, "Prima Donna", which bursts at the seams with an energy that makes it impossible not to nod along. Throughout this entire EP, Staples is showing no signs of falling off, it seems, and, on account of the dynamism in each track (and collaborations propagated by them), it’s very exciting to think of what he has next up his sleeve.
