Tumi & The Volume are South Africa's equivalence of The Roots. While this mixtape might not sound like it, their past albums will definitely draw that comparison when you lay your ears on them. This is a necessary intro because these guys are huge in South Africa, so it's only right that we give them the proper respect for those of you who have never heard of these guys. The lead rapper you are about to become a fan of goes by the name of Tumi Molekane who has been quoted by his fellow countrymen as "one of the most prominent emcees of our generation". Needless to say Tumi is regarded as one of the best rappers South Africa has ever seen. The sad thing is, how many people outside of SA know this? Apparently not enough. So lets change that... The last time we heard from Tumi & The Volume was way back in 2010 when they released their sophomore album Pick A Dream. We thought that maybe they retired but It turns out we completely missed their new mixtape that was released last year. This new mixtape (The POWA Mixtape) highlights Tumi spitting his raps over tracks from the likes of Jose Gonzalez, Kanye West, John Mayer, Run DMC + many more. This mixtape also serves as a vehicle for awareness of the massive problem of rape in SA. Featured throughout the tape is a South African girl who speaks about her encounter with rape between each song. It's raw and riveting because there is nothing censored or held back when she talks about it. Unfortunately travesties like this still go on to this day, so instead of it remaining in ignorance, bringing this to the light will hopefully start to eradicate the ignorance of it. If you are into just playing this all the way through then you probably won't care, but if you want to listen to it to pick out your favorites, you might be out of luck.
