ODESZA has been on quite a tear for the past half of a year, releasing one of the biggest albums of 2014 as well as a flurry of signature reworks as well, but today they've built a new alcove in the sonic sphere, a collective that goes by the name "Foreign Family". To inaugurate its new beginning, two distanced artists between New Zealand and India, Troy Samuela (formerly "Samuel Truth") and Monsoonsiren connect on a bass-infused, scorcher of a track entitled "Fiend". From the very get-go of “Fiend”, bold flavors of R&B seep through exquisitely, and as they glide in as an undertone throughout the piece, a flurry of forward-thinking breaks and elements dominate the veneer coating and give off unearthly, instantly absorbing vibes. From his narcotizing lyricism, to the head-nodding percolation of his vocals, Monsoonsiren is portraying his ability to delve into genres aside what he's known for, and with Troy's spectacular backdrop on the track—one making use of bass-hefty arpeggios and spacey chord progressions—a pleasing trap-infused atmosphere is induced. There's a lot of see-sawing between styles throughout this track, but it's far from an intimidating listen, and it's going to be quite engaging to even the most novice of electronic listeners.
