Eighteen year old self-proclaimed bedroom producer thvn (to heaven) is not messing about with his debut nine-track album titled, Butterfly Effect. His music isn’t melody driven, or laden with hooks, but the sheer quality of his sound layering and composition is enough to make this album a winner. The tracklist as a whole is strong from start to finish, and maintains it’s identity all the way through. Album continuity is tough when the music you’re making throws conventional song formats out the window, and basically starts from scratch, but thvn manages to keep things moving, and surprisingly, very accessible. To top things off, Butterfly Effect, with its clicks, pops, and abstinence from almost anything distorted, feels very much the spiritual descendant of the Postal Services’ Give Up. No easy feat. There are no filler tracks, but there are a few standouts. The Kyson sampling “Tides” opens up with somber vocals and some piano sampling, generating some good momentum for the rest of the project, and “ You Float Like a Feather” clicks up the energy mid-album to keep things going. With “Sleepy,” thvn really comes into his own, and the atmosphere provided by the string section is beautifully worked into the background, making you feel like it’s being played at the top of a mountain. The Storm Inside of Me” picks up where “Sleepy” Left off, but shrinks the sound a bit, and brings you back down for a soft landing. With such a good grasp of production work, it wouldn't be surprising if Butterfly Effect only marks the beginning of a long and popular career for the young producer. butterfly effect by thvn
