Thomston — Collarbones

Thomston

Collarbones

Thomston started out his career with the release of an astoundingly strong EP, and while the subsequent buzz and follow-up work has made School Night a little harder to come by these days, we're not complaining. His new material has done the near-impossible and topped the already-high bar he's set for himself with previous efforts, and so it's only nature for "Collarbones", his latest single, to follow the amazing natural progression of his from his other, Argonaut EP. Although Thomston's sounds have always been ones we've loved, we'd be remiss to say that there's not something more mature about the one in this track here. Maybe it's just because of the slower pacing, or maybe it's the way he delivers the song's story with skillfully crafted lyrics, but whatever the case may be, there's a definite sense that he's exploring a new level of subtlety in his sound. There's no obviously discernible hook in "Collarbones", but the emotions and message Thomston purveys have been placed front and center, and the song is still catchy as hell once the words have wormed their way into your brain. Thomston has played his cards very carefully since his debut, as we've alluded to, so it's not really a surprise that this single is such a win, but it is nice to see a favorite still in such good form. Grab this one if you're in the mood for a quality tune to brood to, and keep a sharp eye and ear out for more from the budding star on April 20, the date his brand-new Backbone EP arrives.
