THIEF is a new electronic duo based out of a bedroom in North London (their words, not ours), but their music sounds much bigger and more refined than its humble roots would suggest. It's dance music first and foremost, but despite the fact that the instrumentals are almost definitely computer generated, the composition has a lot of similarities to the more acoustic disciplines of indie-pop that are making the rounds these days. Now, maybe that's just because indie-pop has become increasingly electronic in the last year, but nevertheless, "Friend Lover" represents a really nice blend of genres in a package that's easy to enjoy while also being artfully crafted. To top it all off, the vocals are absolutely on-point. Vocals are usually the weak link in a track like this, but that's most assuredly not the case here. There's relatively little in the way of filtering, so Charlotte Mallory's voice really gets to shine through, and with so many other awesome layers to the song, "Friend Lover" is an awesome start for this up-and-coming duo.
