The Night VI wowed everybody last year with their breakout single, "Thinking Of You", and then, after retreating back into the studios for a spell, they released two more tracks a couple months ago, eliminating any doubts about the band's legitimacy. Their sound is surely refined, but the band takes sonic risks that will keep your ears locked on the speakers when the music is playing, and their ability to fuse technically flawless instrumentation with modern pop is, at times, shockingly smooth. It's like they've just given you a music lesson without you even knowing it. You didn't sign up for one, and it may be subliminal, but you got the lesson anyway, and now you're a more well-rounded music junkie because of it. The Night VI's newest single, "Wonderlust" is much more upbeat than their other work, and yes, those synths wear their '80s heritage on their sleeve with pride, but the song is still very much the technical masterpiece that the band's other pieces are. The guitar riffs and bassline are relatively simple, but that's not a product of the song lacking complexity; rather, The Night VI has trimmed all the fat, and what's left is a track that doesn't lose its shine no matter how many times you hit the replay button. Thematically, "Wonderlust" is a lot different then "Sienna" or "Thinking Of You", and to be honest, the new sound threw us for a loop at first. However, once you get acclimated, the quality of the music really sinks in, and it's becoming more apparent that The Night VI is not only exceptional-sounding, but highly versatile, too.
