If we made a list of the most unique and talented indie-rock bands we know, we'd most likely have The Kooks featured right up at the top. Part of the reason for this definitely has something to do with the latest installation into their discography, Listen—a project of theirs released today—and there's really nothing more we'd like to do than share our favorites from it with you. "Sweet Emotion" and "Murderer" happen to be those favorites, and they truly exemplify the heart of The Kooks' spirited vibe. In the past, we've seen tracks all over the map from the group that have sported an acoustic aura as well as heavy electric riffs, and additionally, have heard lead vocalist Luke Pritchard with his unexampled ability to either whisper us through a track, or send us sailing with hard-hitting vocals. With these two new efforts of theirs, we've more of the eclectic goodness to partake in, so you won't be hearing any complaints on our end. The frame of our first track highlighted, "Sweet Emotion", is composed with an attention-grabbing hook that, together with a grab bag of instruments that tag along as the track progresses, focuses our ears on a contemporary Kooks sound that captivates us as equally as hits of the past. A static (and very noticeable) theme throughout this LP, a theme that we have seen so many times before, is how Pritchard and his counterparts incorporate their emotions into their work, and with tracks like "Emotion", we've the ability to capture again the deeply radiating happiness. "Murderer", the second favorite, offers a lighter, slightly acoustic touch to the album that again reminds us of how the members are able to traverse decades with their vintage-sounding vocals and guitar sections, and we advise an attentive listen be given to it on account of the past-tracking sound. Be sure to listen to the tracks of the today-released Listen in their entirety, as the final minutes often contain contrasting music sections that add a bonus touch to many of the selections (they really make them sound like whole other tracks). We recommend you get the deluxe version, too (if purchasing is something you've an interest in), as it contains tracks such as the previously reviewed "Murderer" that are essential for a wholesome listening experience.
