Amidst the craze of new music this week, The Grouch & Eligh did the unthinkable and dropped three albums at once: one collaborative album, and one solo album each. We've already spoke on the collaborative effort, The Tortiose and The Crow, and now we move to The Grouch's solo, Lighthouses. (Eligh's solo effort will come next.) Most of the time when hip-hop artists push their careers past their twenties, their music falls off as the original artistic motivations change. For The Grouch, this has never been the case, and that's because he's a part of a minority that finds the creativity and drive to keep going. Now living in Hawaii with his young family, The Grouch is far removed from his days of living in the Bay Area where we all grew up listening to him. He's older and wiser now, electing to rap about health, world affairs, geo-engineering, GMOs, higher levels of consciousness, and all that other stuff that awakened individuals care to discuss. If you're not coming from that kind of perspective, then The Grouch will probably sound too preachy for you. However, if you're among the conscious-rap aficionados, then hearing the Grouch speak on such things is actually quite refreshing. Lighthouses holds its own among the three-album package, with a quiet confidence that speaks volumes on the timelessness of The Grouch, who manages to bless us with good music as the years unwind.
