Any cover of The Cure is going to have to be really original if it wants to grab our attention. With a huge name like theirs, it's tough for the secondary artist to pull something off that can successfully avoid comparison with the original, which in this case, happens to be a classic. These are some big shoes to fill. That being said, Stripmall Architecture's version of The Cure's "Closedown" is a nice rendition, and the new vocals really do bring a whole new angle to the mix. The intro has a lot of great synth work, but where the cover really comes into its own is when the chords start to open up about thirty seconds in. It mimics the way The Cure was able to so artfully turn their tracks into huge sweeping vistas of sound, but Stripmall Architecture doesn't get too carried away with their own, and manages to stay in their wheelhouse, right where the music belongs. This track offers you the best of both worlds; it's still an old standby, but it's also very much relevant, and definitely one you'll want to add to your collection.
