St. Lucia — Cold Case

St. Lucia

Cold Case

The deluxe edition of an album usually has a few extra goodies on it that are worth the additional few bucks, but St. Lucia's additions to When The Night goes beyond the average acoustic track or live recording added, as we see three wholly original tracks supplied. Aside from the standard eleven songs on When The Night, dropping an extra three dollars on the purchase will net you "Forgiveness", "Cold Case", and "Out For Tonight". Of the three, "Cold Case" is hands-down the song of the hour, and while it's got a pace that's a bit more laid-back than the rest of the tracs, its synth line is so well done that you'll be grooving to the beat with almost no effort at all. There's a much funkier vibe on it that you'll recognize instantly, and it really edges up against what you might consider slow-jam territory (you could argue that the saxophones push it over the edge). The band has retained a lot of those tropical textures and ethereal soundscapes from the rest of the album, though, so "Cold Case" is still very much a classic St. Lucia offering. As we see with the track, Jean-Philip's voice is still as captivating as ever, and the efforts in their entirety, both from himself and those behind him, will go a long way towards making sure we don't forget about them when they take their inevitable absence from the public eye to record their second batch of material. It's certainly nice to see that even after such a strong album release, they've all still plenty left in the tank, and "Cold Case" definitely has what it takes to give St. Lucia another hit as they go on their artistic way.
