We premiered SomeKindaWonderful's last cross-genre cover a couple of weeks ago, and the band's clever rendition of Tupac's modern classic was an instant hit. This time, they've come armed with a cover of yet another iconic title in the rap world, "Juicy", by Biggie Smalls, but the formula here is a bit different than the one alluded to above. The song still features those signature SKW vocals and slow-rock sounds, but we're treated this time around with lines from the emcee himself, as well as the addition of some female vocal sections as well. All these little tweaks to their original cover format add up to give the song a lot of depth, and it all fits exceptionally well into the spirit of the original track. What's a bit interesting to note is that SomeKindaWonderful's music sounds nothing like the early '90s rap they've been choosing to work with of late. The band has a dark edge that's blatantly brandished in their original work, and this commitment to crafting songs that have some weight to them means the band has more than enough legitimacy to tackle (and do justice to) big tracks like these. To be sure, the cover's a definite win, and while this version of "Juicy" is a huge departure in style from the original mix, there's no questioning the fact that they've captured the essence of what Biggie was trying to get across with his art. It's a pretty impressive thing to listen to, their interpretation is, and its success in the wake of their upcoming album will surely reinforce their status as a rising act in the realm of all things creative-sounding.
