SKYLR, a Chicago-via-Iowa singing-songwriting talent, is about to make her mark with her heavy-handed debut, "Devil". We say "heavy-handed" not in the literal sense, of course, but sonically, because alongside her soaring vocals is huge-sounding, trap-infused electronic from new-to-our-ears producer Zak "Fox" Jablow. As the first offering we're hearing from her, too, we'd say it's enough to warrant attention from anyone who's an ear for genre-bending music that transcends any preconceived notion of what pop music is supposed to sound like, but rather than have us dissect what the song is about, let SKYLR explain her art: "My first single, ‘Devil’, is one that is very special to me -- one that started as a two page poem and a simple chord progression on piano. I was inspired to write ‘Devil’ after finishing Erik Larson’s novel, Devil in the White City. I found a lot of unexpected parallels to my own life and relationships in his writing. The song is about a girl who feels inescapably connected to a man that feels nothing for her in return. A mad love story. While she knows that her love for him will be the death of her, she’s still not willing to let it go. But it’s more than just a twisted tale of love, it’s about the never-ending battle within all of us between good and evil" There's no release date on her forthcoming debut EP, but you can expect us to be covering it if it resembles anything close to "Devil".
