About two years ago, Dutch producer SIROJ dropped a house-heavy piece entitled “Directions”, and though it was eventually taken down and replaced by a vocal-led version assisted by Cody ChesnuTT, it was only a matter of time before a highly intuitive beatmaker decided to refurbish the piece. Jarreau Vandal is that intuitive beatmaker, and with his take on OJ's original here, he's going to turn several heads. The artistic compatriot most recently had us enthralled with “Letgo”, a piece shimmering with lacquered synth work and abrupt, engaging drums, and while his approach on this particular rework is unquestionably Vandal-esque, what’s especially intriguing to us through it is his continued exploration and execution of unorthodox sonic alcoves. Within the beginnings of the track, a slice of Cody’s vocals is carefully paced with heavy chord stabs by Jarreau, and as sweeping inclusions make their way in, we get a drop that contains crisp, saw-led notes and adeptly positioned drums. Jarreau decides to employ an extemporary edge throughout the revamp, too, as oscillations between heavy drum sequences and emotive chord progressions peacock his abilities further yet.
