We were among the first on the scene five years ago when one mysterious newcomer named Lorde burst into the spotlight with her pop prowess and dry wit. At the time, it seemed clear that the young artist was a force of nature and that nothing besides Lorde, herself, could stand in the way of her success. Now, fast-forward to today when we pressed play on "Darling Don't" from Sophie Cates (SILVER), a seventeen-year-old artist from a coastal city in Massachusetts, and we've felt a jolt of déjà vu, which, obviously, is very exciting for us all. There are many obvious similarities between SILVER and Lorde, but the most important is a bit abstract. The two artists manage to capture snapshots of the teen experience, one of the few, truly unchanged traditions of Western culture. This is what makes these artists' debuts timeless, though, aside from that, the writing here is clever and surprising, content is personal and universal, and the song structure used is catchy, yet complex as well. In summation, you should really give SILVER a listen now, and you should not be surprised at all if she ends up getting big like the former artist.
