Sia, The Weeknd, and Diplo on one track? That’s either really good news, or really bad news...Too often, singles featuring star-studded collaborations across genres come off as overly polished, and skirt the edge of the pop music abyss just a little too close. In an effort to guarantee that the big names plastered over the album artwork aren’t wasted on a funky track which will probably only appeal to a small demographic, a concerted effort is usually made to widen the possible audience by making it predictable and familiar. The endearing quirks of the artist are traded in for slick production, and what would have been interesting music is now just “good” music. Fortunately, ‘Elastic Heart’ does not fit into that mould. Diplo’s presence in the sound can clearly be felt, and as a whole, the track isn’t too far off from something that he might release under his Mad Decent label. Sia and Weeknd do their thing, and their combined vocal prowess makes for one really enjoyable release.
