This one’s a bit darker than our ordinary posts, but the way secLuse balances out the bleak vocals with the very creative and eclectic production work is impressive. With sounds that range from the kind of industrial beats you might on a Trent Renzor project, to some sort of sitar-esque line of synths, “Lawless” has got it all, and secLuse blends it all together perfectly. The intro starts off a bit slow, but the cautious pacing at the beginning starts to make sense when more and more layers (and tension from them) get added on. Like a good story, “Lawless” builds anticipation for the next sonic plot twist, and by the time the second drop hits, you’re hooked for the rest of the ride. As a whole, “Lawless” is of pretty high quality, but there’s one little section at about the two-and-a-half minute mark that’s especially powerful. After the preceding two minutes of steady progress, secLuse lets it all fall away for a couple seconds, electing to inject a set of shallow chimes that make the song feel both eerie and foreboding. It’s a cool production trick, and when they launch back into the heavier bass line and beat, you’re left with an even stronger impression of the weight and drama that the Melbourne-based duo was able to carefully cultivate.
