After being musicians for various Australian acts for some time, a pair of Brisbane friends finally decided that all the music they had been tinkering with together over the years deserved a legitimate outlet. Thus, in July of 2014, Scholar was born. A humble inception for them, sure, but their entrance into the music world was anything but. The pulsating percussion and infectious low-end groove of their debut single, “Skin”, was a bold exclamation to the world that this was no mere moonlighting hobby, but rather, that Scholar was a production outfit to behold. Behold we did, too, as we featured the single in not one, but two of our Year End Lists for 2014. Now, as they prepare to take on 2015, we are privileged to have the premiere of their latest single, “Daylight”. As you absorb the opening bars of “Daylight”, you start to see a more accurate picture of Scholar's sonic perception. The slower tempo on the track allows a deeper exploration of each musical element and all of their intricacies as they weave seamlessly together, forming a rich musical bed for 16-year-old Brisbane songstress Cypher to come in and absolutely floor us with her captivating voice. The smoky allure of Cypher pairs perfectly with the musical landscape that Scholar constructs, and we're satisfied saying the collaboration is one of the best we've heard this year thus far.
