It's always refreshing to see an artist or producer build an album around an unusual concept. The topics of love, lust, heartache, and haters have all been beaten to death by creative minds over the years, and the taste of atypical sonic commentary has seemed almost extinct as a result. It's a disappointing reality when analyzed; we've a wealth of resources available to excavate bright minds and artistic endeavors, and for whatever reason, we've still been stuck with floods of cliched sound and speech. We've some wildly courageous creatives among us, though; individuals brave enough to burden the weight of their own inspiration, remain unchanged by reception received, and continue on with their craft no matter the expectations they end up inheriting. It's uncommon to come across these figures with any kind of frequency, but when they are identified, there's no mistaking their passionate presence. Sango has been one individual fitting this descriptive bill, and his sequel project to 2012's Da Rocinha, Da Rocinha 2, uncovers his latest lesson in spectacularly unsullied art. Da Rocinha 2 continues the sonic tale of his Brazilian intrigue, and, like its predecessor, expounds upon the influences of Rio de Janeiro's "baile funk" genre, a derivative of Miami bass music. Sango has before referenced this work of his as a "sound study" as much as a musical interest, and through the entirety of the Da Rocinha offerings, we are definitely able to hear his appreciation for the culture he has come to so greatly admire and reflect upon through his latest batch of earthy instrumentals. There's a predictable amount of experimentation implemented within Da Rocinha 2 (which isn't to say anything at all about a lack of sonic ingenuity). There's plenty of bass, alarmingly unique sound textures, striking percussion, and exotic vocal samples and loops to boot, and the amalgamation of the elements combine to create another captivating work in the catalog of the Soulection producer. We just don't see this kind of influence and inspiration interwoven so seamlessly into a body of work anymore, and for that reason, we can't get enough of the Grand Rapids producer's latest project.
