"The best song is probably on the B-side / Won't be surprised when the label deny", croons Chicago rapper and producer Saba on "GREY", a deep cut from off his latest project which dropped on Thursday. His reservations and frustrations regarding labels and mainstream rap air out on the quietly soulful track, rising into a crashing freestyle that's a highlight on the album. Saba's pen prowess is nothing new to us. His 2016 Bucket List Project is a lyrical treasure in its own right. CARE FOR ME, however, is like stepping into an intimate, super captivating open mic night where Saba's soul is on full display. Each track is individually insightful and profoundly personal (listen to the grief-stricken, aggressive heart-tugger "LIFE" and the painfully reflective "PROM / KING"), and Saba's touch is constant, even on the Chance The Rapper-boosted cut "LOGOUT". While mainstream media continues to buzz over the weekend's heavy pop-rap drops (and we urge you listen to them), we also implore you to check out this beautiful slice of hip-hop artistry from a different side.
