"Republic Cucumber Magazine" may sound like the name of a hip new monthly, but in fact, it's the name of a new Australian band with possibly the greatest moniker to date from the land (we see you, Vancouver Sleep Clinic). Their debut single, "Asylum", sounds like a sweet and safe place to visit and vibe out in, too, so color us absolutely smitten with the effort. Its production consists of distorted drums, soft synth pads, dreamy electric guitars, and a mellow bassline, and the band's female vocalist, Sarah Law, brings a truly palpable energy to the track during her verse later on in the effort (the male singer does a superb job early on). The mixture of ambient, electronic, and alternative-rock coupled with the band's underlying influences in pop and neo-soul provide good vibes and make this one of our favorite listens of the year thus far. Knowing that Cucumber is currently working on their first EP, too, has us hopeful they'll have more works out in the near future, because as "Asslyum" clearly shows, the band is on to great things.
