With Kendrick Lamar’s ultra-incendiary verses on Big Sean’s latest single, “Control,” managing to create quite a few waves as of late, Pusha T’s decision to release “Nostalgia” when he did was a smart one. The song is all but guaranteed to generate some serious buzz on the Internet in the coming weeks, and is the perfect track to build some hype for his new album, My Name Is My Name, set for release in early October. With that being said, the song itself is actually quite worthy of praise, even when examined outside of the context it was released in. The beat doesn’t have a ton of layers, but it doesn’t really need them, and the high-octave electric guitar sample that runs through the length of the track is the perfect compliment to Pusha and Kendrick’s relentless lyric pacing. Despite a relatively slow tempo, the track is loaded with pent-up energy, and makes for a solid showing from both rappers.
