Hawaiian hip-hop isn't always making headlines these days, but if the work of Honolulu-based rapper PRIE is any indication of musical quality in that neck of the Pacific Ocean, then the blog world should probably be paying more attention. "Flash & Flaunt" is built on top of a laid-back beat that has some great jazz influences, and if you listen hard enough, even a little bit of french house. The lyrics are crafted well, but PRIE really wins because of his ability to synch up his voice with the melody and bassline in such a way that his words feel more like another instrument in the layering, making the whole track sound effortless. If you're looking for some solid hip-hop with a well-made beat, then this one's for you. Not every piece of music is a product of its environment, but it's hard not to hear the island sunshine in this one as PRIE and blackbear let their words float over the warmly lit melodies and quiet percussion.
