It is an incredibly difficult task to create a retro sound in music without making it sound contrived and gimmicky. Pom Poms, a brand-new duo from Los Angeles, have mastered the throwback aesthetic on their debut track, "Betty", however. Vocalist Marlene Gold croons soulfully over the work of Grammy-nominated producer Billy Mohler, generating an exciting sound that draws on influences from the Motown era while maintaining a freshness and youth that makes the track so great. For a debut, "Betty" is a rarity, and Gold demonstrates a unique vocal prowess on it that's not often found in artists today. Definitely watch out for more from the pair.
