Positivity and love. If there's one genre of music that can infuse itself almost directly with these two ideas, it has to be hip-hop. Now I know, I know, hip-hop can also be a platform for homophobia and hate, but really that's just art imitating life, unfortunately. Bear with me on this one. What other genre can craft a song where the beat, the lyrics, the overall sense of emotion you get just from listening to it all combine into something that is literally a vessel for a single message designed to bring you, even if it's just temporarily, to a higher level of thought? Sure, indie, rock, folk, electronic, and other genres can be beautiful, and there are countless songs from all of these and more that are full of positivity and love. But there's just something about hip-hop that takes this to another level. Maybe it's the nature of the music, maybe it's how hip-hop is a true story-teller's medium. You might not agree, that's fine, but here to put some oomph behind my point is the latest Poldoore track, "Sweet Memories" featuring Awon on lyrics and DJ Damented on the scratch. I dare you to listen and not feel uplifted in some way. Take a listen below, and remember, life is what you make it.
