Oscar And The Wolf — Strange Entity

Oscar And The Wolf

Strange Entity

We covered Oscar And The Wolf's last track, "Undress", here a couple months ago, but as far as release schedules go, Oscar And The Wolf's has been relatively light, all things considered. As it turns out, the release hiatus was not for nothing, though, because aside from touring for the past couple of years, Oscar has been putting together a full-length album (dubbed Entity) so that all of their fans will finally be able to sink their teeth into something a bit more substantial. Normally, EPs work fine when trying to build buzz and nurture a following, but this band has such a distinct and polished sound, that nothing short of a whole album is really going to do it justice. Like a good story in need of extra time to thicken its plot, Oscar & The Wolf will really benefit from having that extra sonic real estate with which to further develop their sound. "Strange Entity" is one of the lead singles from the album in question, and it's a fantastic piece of indie-electronic that will grab your ears right from the get-go, despite it's rather laid-back pacing. As always, the production work is top-notch, but what really makes this band particularly noteworthy is the way they leverage the almost sinister-sounding vocals to maximum effect. Make no mistake, the group isn't overdoing it, nor are they turning the sonic darkness into some sort of cliché, but they do have a bead on what it takes to craft good, brooding, indie-pop sounds, and they're exploiting that fact to the fullest. There's not a lot of flashy twists and turns in "Strange Entity", and there aren't any huge drops, either, but what there is is extremely well-done, and it's going to give Oscar & The Wolf a very distinct edge over a lot of their contemporaries.
