One Day is a hip-hop collective that features some of Australia's brightest and most successful emcees and producers. The group consists of Horrorshow (Solo and Adit), Spit Syndicate (Nick Lupi and Jimmy Nice), Jackie Onassis (Kai and Raph), and Joyride. The project was conceived back when the crew was all still in high school together in Inner West Sydney, but due to each respective duo and individual's own personal music careers, up until now (when this album was recorded), the One Day crew had yet to fulfill their namesake and aspirations to record an album together. Today, however, their debut full-length, Mainline, bore to fruition, and on it, their experience, talent, camaraderie, and musicianship all came together to create one impressively cohesive album. It's not far-fetched to consider One Day a hip-hop "supergroup" (especially if you've prior knowledge of the members' artistry), but what separates them from other (supergroups) is that the guys of One Day all grew up together. Knowing each other's nuances and individual talents certainly adds up, and a we see on Mainline, each artist brings their individual talent to the supplemental forefront of the work—aiding each other as much as expressing themselves. A seamless artistic synergy is created as a result, from Solo, Kai, Joyride, Nick Lupi, and Jimmy Nice trading raps, to Raph, Adit, and Joyride providing the beats, and together, we see the culmination of their years of experience come into play. From the album, we've already heard the first single, "Love Me Less", as well as the second, "Many Hands" (below), but basing the album on these two tracks is not enough to gain a proper insight into the body of work. Mainline is rooted in hip-hop, of course, but as the album rolls along, you're taken into into pop-sensible, and even reggae-influenced, territories. From harmony-laden choruses, to intricate, free-flowing rapping, each song has its own unique flavor, and the album turns out a very interesting listen because of it.
