There's nothing more draining than hearing music that's had the life sucked out of it, either by being compressed, produced, mixed, or mastered to too much of a cute and curated sonic tee. Sometimes we need things scuffed up, worked up, and rough enough around the edges to give us a sense of admired authenticity, because, like life itself, we need music to reflect our not-always-flawless state. For the experience, we often look to the low-fi end of sound, and what we're hearing from the Brisbane-based four-piece Moses Gunn Collective is the embodiment of all the aforementioned thoughts. Mind you, their sound has been done plenty of times (comparisons would include the likes of Portugal. The Man, Temples, Tame Impala), so MGC isn't reinventing the wheel when it comes to this sound, but what they are doing is doing it well. It's one thing to cut out some frequencies to get that "psychedelic" sound, but it's another to cap everything off with superb songwriting, and what we're hearing on the track we've here plucked (especially on the chorus) proves that this collective is well on their way to turn some heads and make happy some ears. "Shalala" is the namesake of this first single from the band's forthcoming EP that's due out in October, and when that arrives, you can scoop it for free via Bandcamp.
