If you remember PHOX, the indie pop act of the early '10s responsible for "Slow Motion" and "1936", then Monica Martin's voice will be familiar. The former lead of that band has just released her debut single, "Cruel", and it features striking songwriting and smooth production we are glad to have here. The piece delivers the same warm quirkiness that Martin brought to PHOX, but it carries the weight of a pop hit that one might find Adele singing as well. We're thrilled to hear what Monica Martin has done on her own here, and we look forward to hearing even more marvelous material from her soon!
