It’s been a long time coming for Misun’s debut album, and now we’ve finally a composite effort to report from the DC-rooted group. We’ve carried pretty wholesome coverage of the act since their onset, featuring tracks from “Promise Me” years ago to the most recent “Penny,” and along the way, we’ve come to find that the group carries a unique indie-rock sound that’s as creative as it is energetic. Superstitions is the container for all the group’s best works to fall into—works that contain sounds of multiple genres and burst the listening bubble of the average listener. Whether it be the indie-rock heard in tracks like “Harlot” or “Penny”, or the slightly electronic-hinted notes of title track “Superstitions,” we’ve an effort that hits a range of tones spot on—an accolade that we’ve tagged on the group in many works past. The title track features blossoming synths paired with vocals that are reverbed to perfection, but if you’re not a fan of the electronic taste, fear not, because there’s more than enough left on the album for you to enjoy. The indie-rock vibes embodied in “‘Harlot” are home to lo-fi electric guitar riffs and poppy vocals, which is exactly what we’d be looking for in any hit of its kind. It successfully time-machines us back to a few decades ago when the riffs were heavily listened to, and we can pretty safely say it carries a sound that’s equally captivating if not even more so. Hybrid indie-rock-electro tracks such as “Texas To Minnesota” pair subtle synths with hard-hitting strums, too—the perfect combination for a group whose released only a single album. It’s hard not to favor an album that goes above and beyond, especially here with Superstitious’ extension of the norm with its inclusion of numerous exquisite-sounding works that are, as always, at the pinnacle of the group’s potential.
