Miguel

coffee

Lately, we've seen a trend of major artists releasing unexpected, previously unannounced projects. Perhaps inspired by D'Angelo and the Vanguard's surprise release of Black Messiah, Miguel has decided to bless us with a brand-new EP, himself, late last night, and we can assure you it isn't a collection of throwaway tracks. On the contrary, in nwa.hollywooddreams.coffee, Miguel presents an edgy, unique style of R&B that we're all really digging. Our favorite song from the three-track project is "nwa", a fairly minimalistic work containing an authentically rough old-school feel. The song is founded on a beat of acoustic percussion and sparse electric guitar strums, and every once in a while, some synths subtly make their way into the mix. Here, the spotlight shines primarily on Miguel's soulful singing and Kurupt's impressive bars. Next up is "hollywood dreams", and though it also has a throwback feel, it conveys some more older rock vibes instead. The final song, "coffee", is where we hear more of a modern sound with electronic percussion, bright synths, and airy soundscapes—but all in all, Miguel has demonstrated admirable creativity in his short EP here, and we're now doubly excited to hear what other sounds he has in the works.
