This modern life of ours is hectic and often ruled by impatience, and, as a society, we seem to have an insatiable appetite for information that demands to be fed in 140 characters or less. The same can be said with music where we all barely publish a post before the next "big thing" is discovered. It is a breath of fresh air, then, when an artist forgoes this disposable attitude and truly takes the time they feel is necessary to convey the honest nature of their music, and it is our privilege as well to highlight such music, as we are doing here with the premiere of “Winter Sun” by Bristol artist Joseph Dunn (Maybug). From its onset, it's clear that Maybug is in no hurry with the piece. Each soft guitar note is plucked without any sense of urgency, accommodating Dunn to showcase his impressive, yet delicate vocal range as he sings his ode to the brief glimpse of winter sun. The nature of the musicianship is inherently sparse, too, and this allows for themes of separation to fully develop before finally incorporating further instrumentation in the final act. Whether the song is a mere lament of the long UK winters or a deeper statement on the appreciation of what you have versus what you lack is open to individual interpretation, but what's unquestionable is the ultimate true beauty of the track.
