One of the most impressive qualities in music is the ability to combine two genres within a track, and, when done correctly, the results are often the most special songs. Maggie Rogers, an NYU student who blew away Pharrell and eventually the rest of the music industry with her debut single, "Alaska", is a perfect example of an artist making that blend, and her perfect fuse between dance and folk created the ethereal, ecstatic effort that gathered millions of streams. Today, she's back with a brand-new single, "Dog Years", and it's a solid follow-up that was worth the four-month wait. Although Maggie sticks with a similar formula here, there's still a level of originality that comes with it that gives the track an undeniably great sound. Her chilling falsettos and impeccable songwriting are complemented with unique percussion pieces and a synth-heavy climax, and the result is an emotive, groovy, nostalgic banger of a song that's layered incredibly well. This is a well-executed song all the way around, and it's great to hear that she's keeping her quality high. Here's to more great tracks from her to come.
