M.I.A. has never been one to shy away from using her music to speak on political issues, and with her brand-new single, "Borders", she's as poignant as she's ever been. On this new track of hers, we find a hard-hitting, trap-influenced beat leading the way alongside her spirited, rap-slanted call-and-response lyrics, and the overall message of it is a clear one: angst regarding the current refugee plight we find our ourselves in these days. To make matters even more powerful, the video that's accompanying that track is pretty damn incredible, too. The clip features some expensive-looking fly-over shots of boats that are jammed full of people, and there's even a part where it looks like she's on the bow of a ship made out of represented slaves. Of course, everything we just mentioned here is speculation to some degree, but there's no doubt she has one of the most interesting tracks of the year with her new one here. "Borders" will be featured on M.I.A.'s upcoming album, Matahdatah, that has no release date at this time.
