We come across a lot of obscure tracks when we're scanning the web for music, and more times than not, many of these tracks end up being overly weird in a way we don't admire. However, we have something for you that we can promise is unlike anything you've ever heard before, and we say this in the best way possible. Lyon & Lowe is a new duo from the UK and US, and they've debuted with an extraordinarily unique track that's absolutely stupefied us here at Hillydilly. "Like Oedipus" might take you a couple of listens through to fully comprehend (as the abundance of nuances within the piece make it difficult to wrap your head around the song's complexity). It all begins with the fading clutter of muffled voices and a growing set of synths, which are then accompanied by minimal drums and an effected vocal hum; and once this short segment ends, the song's primary sound is introduced by an unparalleled set of inchoate synths and some equally distinct percussion. Electronic chaotically scatters about, while some form of consistency is maintained only by the vocals, but there's really one main element that propels "Like Oedipus" into its own distinct lane, and that's Lyon & Lowe's paradoxical production, repeatedly and unexpectedly stripping away all noise for a split-second before entirely returning it. The method creates a sound that is totally incomparable, and we can't exaggerate the track's massive extent of detail, ranging from the multiplicity of varying effects to the subtle moment of violin. If you're anything like us, you'll keep catching new bits each time you listen through "Like Oedipus", and we can confidently declare it to be one of the most intriguing debuts we've heard in some time. We haven't the slightest clue as to where Lyon & Lowe's sound will progress from here, but it looks like we won't have to wait too long to find out, as the pair has an EP coming mid-summer that we'll be sure to keep an eye and ear out for.
