Lydia Ainsworth has been putting out material that blurs the lines between electronic, folk, and indie-rock for some time now, but this new track of hers, “Take Your Face Off”, takes her willingness to blend genres to the next level. Her voice is deep and textured within the effort, but it’s the little stabs of falsetto that really give the track the dynamic quality you’ll pick up early on in the runtime. The beat behind it, while muted at times, never really leaves the soundscape, and its ever-present thumping drives the song forward and compliments the high-energy synths perfectly. As far as complexity goes, there aren’t too many many moving parts in “Take Your Face Off”, but Lydia makes the most of the sound layering, and not once does the music get dull or overly repetitive. With each segment comes a new crop of auxiliary sounds to compliment the backbone of the piece, and the final result is a single that never loses your attention despite its efforts to keep things subtle and reserved. “Take Your Face Off” was released as part of her Right From Real project, and while the rest of the track list is solid, this particular track was just too good to pass up.
