In this current musical landscape, it could be argued that grandiosity is favored over a more minimalist approach. As artists grow into their career, many seem to have a misguided notion that the number of instrumental and sample tracks laid down is indicative of musical quality, but here with the perfect case study as to why the “bigger is better” mindset isn’t always the best solution is New York artist luca and his new single, “Best On”. Taking a slight reprieve from duties with his band, Yellerkin, Luca Buccellati has enlisted the help of fellow SXSW compatriot Tei Shi with this latest single. The percussion track is sparse and does little more than maintain tempo, however, the inherent porosity acts to highlight the eclectic little samples littered throughout and accentuates the striking, harmonized vocal take by Tei. With only two lines to deliver, it fits perfectly with the ethos of what luca was trying to create, and it proves that beauty does indeed lie in simplicity.
