L A Y L A — Smokestacks

L A Y L A

Smokestacks

Brace yourself, because the slow-build intro to L A Y L A's newest song, "Smokestacks", is simply epic. A lot of the new indie names right now have a really small sound, and while we're not ever going to complain about a song that goes for sonic intimacy, there's something really special about artists who go all out with sweeping choruses and big notes. L A Y A L A has done just that with this song, and she manages to do so while still making sure the production work isn't too bogged down by an excess of aftereffects or filtering. When you first hit play, you're greeted with a somber set of vocals, but the magic really happens when they get paired up with a string section and a big, booming, drum beat. With textures locked in place, the background voices chime in and everything falls together with perfect timing. "Smokestacks" cultivates a sense of occasion, and when it's just about ready to wind down, a rolling snare pops its head up, making you wish there were just a couple extra minutes tacked on to the end so you could continue to enjoy the talent this London artist has in spades.
