Kwabs can really do no wrong, and he's shown it time and time again with his superbly crafted, incredibly powerful-sounding tracks. As he's neared the release of his debut album, Love + War, too, he's been reminding us of that fact with several excellent tracks from it, and today, we get the phenomenal next one in procession, the weighty, sincere, and truly significant-sounding "Layback" that's actually one of the first tracks that he's ever wrote. Produced by good friend Dave Okumu on the updated version of the track, "Layback" sees an impressively involved, unusually electronic instrumental for Kwabs to work over, and, like so many times before, he casts his commanding, utterly soulful tone atop it. The effort feels full—there aren't many inadvertent breaks or lulls of inactivity within it—and, in this more rich sonic light, has us as ready for his album as we ever have been.
