Late last year, Hobart musician/producer Cal Young made waves in the pool of Australian pop with the release of his self-titled KOWL EP. Upon hearing tracks such as “Sending You My Heart” and “Who Am I”, he swiftly became a Hillydilly favourite, with multiple features as well as a coveted #3 spot in our Best Australian Tracks of 2013 Year End List. Cal has now returned with his sound, much to our delight, and we're treated to the first taste of his upcoming EP with “Breathe With You”. KOWL plays to his strengths on this track, honing in on the dark 80’s inspired synths that were alluded to in his previous works. The darkened funk of Tom Howard’s guitar provides urgency and propels the song forth without moving into campier territories. As the striking vocals of Kesta coerce us through, frequent KOWL-collaborator Nick Squires once again lays some sultry saxophone to the last third, painting a stark panorama of a dishevelled 80’s cop driving the streets at night with the most sinister intentions. This latest offering from KOWL is another great entry in what is an already incredible repertoire. His new EP, Heartbreak Diaries, is out March 7th.
