Knox Fortune may be a name that's now familiar. He's produced for the likes of Vic Mensa, Towkio, and the SaveMoney crew, and he's featured on “All Night” from Chance The Rapper’s Coloring Book LP. Regardless, the Chicagoan aimed to change his narrative earlier this year with the slow release of his solo work, and singles “Lil’ Thing” and “Help Myself” definitely did showcase a different shade to the artist—a shade which has lead to the eventual release of his debut Paradise LP we featured here. It’s always interesting to hear what an artist-producer known primarily for their work in one specific genre does when left to their own devices, and Paradise shows Fortune has scores more to offer than his production work. Although you can catch fleeting glimpses of hip-hop influences throughout, this LP is a masterclass in diverse, alternative pop compositions. Whether with the driving immediacy of “I Don’t Wanna Talk About It”, the warping electronic of “Strange Days”, or the emphatic, luminous pop of “Keep You Close”, Knox proves he is not intimidated by genre fluidity, but emboldened by it.
