Ride / Carry On

As the year draws to a close, we are finally seeing some great material trickle from artists that we came across at the start of the year. One such release is the debut EP from Melbourne group Klo, who first blipped on our musical radar in March with the release of their debut single “Make Me Wonder”. From that time, the duo has been holed up working on their live show (which they debuted in September) and fleshing out their inaugural release, which has taken the form of their Cusp EP. The material that we heard prior to this release with the aforementioned “Make Me Wonder” and the follow-up single “Under Lie” introduced us to the sultry voice of Chloe Kaul and the musical prowess of her cousin, Simon Lam. The production on display from Lam is a departure from his work with I’lls, the other act he features in, and without throwing any shade in the direction of I’lls, we feel it is Klo where his work truly shines. When paired with Chloe’s hazy croon, his nuanced composition just pops in a way not many acts these days can replicate. This harmonic symbiosis is also prominently featured on “Take Us To The Grave” and “Ride / Carry On”, the two new tracks that appear on the EP. Both tracks contain the crisp, blunt percussion and fresh production we have come to expect from Lam, and they act as well as another vessel for Chloe to flex her impossibly smoky vocal range.
