Artists don't always have a sound out of the gate that clearly defines them, no matter what debut tracks and albums may make you believe. There's a lot of fine-tuning going on behind the scenes—sounds being tried out, inflections being tested, and atmospheres surveyed—and occasionally, it takes a quantity of efforts before one truly sticks. That's been the case for Brisbane producer, Kizmet (Leon Brennan), who's ventured through house, hip-hop, and chillwave genres before arriving at his own in second and recently released EP, Pacific State, and we've got to say, it's one that's absolutely incredible. Leon describes the EP as "an auditory taste of another place, wherever your mind takes you while listening", and we certainly hear him in that regard, as we've never quite heard the soundscape he's produced on our highlighted track, "Daydreamer". It's at once mystical and surreal, electronic, of course, but not from the normal realm of listening by any means. The usual elemental suspects: manipulated samples, synths, and booming bass, present themselves on the effort, but the calming way Kizmet pulls them together is just flat-out fanciful. The track's as cool as it is alleviating in that regard, and honestly, it's going to be hard to find a reason to move on from it after spinning it a third or fourth time (yes, you'll be playing it that much). Tenru's inhumanly delicate "The Way She Moves" perhaps comes closest to matching the serene soundscape he initiated, but Kizmet's clearly his own, and you're going to want to get the heck in it however you can.
