There’s a select group of artists who have the innate talent to derive intricate soundscapes from rather simple beats, and we'll be the next in line to point out that New York singer-songwriter Kevin Garrett is one such capable musician. In his second-ever single release, “Control,” he lets loose his ability to charm with a soulful voice and tightly knit percussive accompaniments. He opts for a more lax background, too, highlighting the fact that he needn’t a heavy-hitter to snag our attention. “Control” is a lyrical hit as much as it candies our ears, and after a few listens, we’ve latched on to the notion that Garrett’s voice is, in reality, a real messenger for the story he wishes to tell. The quality of his songwriting draws parallels to one revered Sam Smith, and with a voice about as captivating as the Grammy winner's, Mr. Garrett seems to be expressing all he ought to on his journey to success.
