There's something special about the singer-songwriters designation, in my opinion - it's a sense that the artist is more than just an entertainer, that they have something to say and the means to say it. It means they're a true artist in every sense of the word, and music just happens to be their medium. Coming out of the limitless supply of incredible musical talent that is Australia, Kate Martin is the latest artist to add her name to the definition of the true singer-songwriter artist. Her new single "Awaken" is beautiful, layering guitar and vocals with punch in a way we don't hear that often anymore, harkening back to the days of singers like Stevie Nicks who could pack the emotional equivalent of an atom bomb into a few verses. But that's not to say the song is high on itself or untouchable to those looking for a great sound, absolutely not - the guitar chords are spot on, the drums move the beat forward in a simple rhythm, and Martin's voice is beyond gorgeous. This is the type of song to give you goosebumps while you nod your head, or to simply just provide a pleasing soundtrack while you go about your life.
